Parolee Arrested In Halloween Burglary, Sex Assault On Anaheim Woman

ANAHEIM (CBS) — A 35-year-old parolee was back behind bars Tuesday after he allegedly broke into a home and sexually assaulted a woman sleeping inside. The incident happened on Halloween night as the woman's husband slept beside her, a sheriff's spokesman said.

Anaheim resident Christopher David Schwanke faces charges of digital penetration and burglary, said Jim Amormino of the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

Schwanke, who does not know the couple, showed up uninvited when they had a backyard party about two weeks ago at their home in the 9000 block of Pacific Avenue in Anaheim, Amormino said.

"He was acting bizarre so the victim's husband asked him to leave, but before he left he dropped his pants and exposed himself," Amormino said.

The couple did not alert authorities, he said, but saw Schwanke again at about 7:30 p.m. Monday in front of their home and approached him.

"They wanted to know who he was," Amormino said, and they started "casual conversation" with Schwanke, who told them he was in the neighborhood visiting a friend.

About 11 p.m. Monday, Amormino said, the couple was home asleep when the woman felt somebody touching her. She assumed it was her husband and said, "What are you doing?" and he said, "I'm sleeping, what do you mean?"

They both realized someone else had sexually assaulted her with a finger, Amormino said.

The husband found Schwanke inside and scuffled until he was able to restrain the suspect, he said. Meanwhile, the victim called the sheriff's department.

"He is a parolee with a long rap sheet who was recently released from prison," Amormino said of Schwanke, who allegedly broke into the house through a locked rear door.

Schwanke has a record of robbery, domestic violence and narcotics violations, the sheriff's spokesman said.

The suspect was being held on $100,000 bail.
