Oxnard Beset By Fumigation Burglaries

OXNARD (CBSLA.com) — The Oxnard Police Department is warning residents to be aware of a rash of fumigation burglaries in the community.

There have been 26 fumigation burglaries -- 24 in the last six months alone.

The burglaries have occurred throughout Oxnard with officials saying the heaviest concentration has been in the south end of the city including the neighborhoods of Cal-Gisler, Kamala Durley Park and Bartolo Square.

Burglars have been targeting electronic equipment (TV, computers/laptops/tablets, gaming systems, and DVD players), jewelry, tools, cash, clothes and purses. In three burglaries, firearms have also been stolen.

The police also said the thief, or thieves, is putting their own health at risk, especially during peak exposure time when the pesticide is being employed. They wrote in a statement, "Entering any tented home is hazardous, because extermination companies use deadly gases to eradicate termites and other pests from properties."

Earlier this year, Ventura Police also warned residents about a series of fumigation burglaries. LA County has also reported an increase in this type of crime.

Oxnard Police encourage residents to remove small valuables from their homes during the fumigation process.

Officials also advise neighbors to remain vigilant and report any suspicious people or activity during fumigation dates. If you see suspicious activity, you're asked to call the Oxnard Police Department at (805) 385-7740.

Authorities say residents should also ask fumigators about installing alarms and sensors at jobs -- such sensors can alert fumigators' cellphones if anyone enters a tented building.
