Oxnard Army Sergeant Among 3 Soldiers Killed In Afghanistan
OXNARD (CBS) — A Southland U.S. Army sergeant stationed in Afghanistan was among three soldiers killed in Afghanistan, the military reported Thursday.
Sgt. First Class Clark A. Corley, Jr., 35, of Oxnard, died in Wardak Province on December 3 when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device.
Spc. Ryan M. Lumley, Spc. Thomas J. Mayberry and Corley were all assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division stationed out of Fort Bliss, Texas.
"1st Armored Division and Team Bliss lost three outstanding Soldiers on Dec. 3 in eastern Afghanistan. We are keeping their wives, children, families and friends in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time," stated Maj. Gen. Dana J. H. Pittard, commanding general, 1st Armored Division and Fort Bliss.
"Our three soldiers gave the last full measure of devotion for what they believed in and fought for every single one of us. Freedom is definitely not free," he added.
Corley, who entered the Army in December 1995, was an infantryman who previously served in Korea and Iraq.
He is survived by his wife and one child.
