Only On 2: Parents Calling For VP Of Chino Valley Unified School Board To Resign After Rant
CHINO (CBSLA.com) — Parents are calling for the vice president of the Chino Valley Unified School Board to resign.
The calls follow a rant that Andrew Cruz made at a meeting last month.
CBS2's Crystal Cruz reports the story that is Only On 2.
Cruz was at Thursday evening's board meeting where Andrew Cruz (no relation) apologized.
"After you're done passing out candy, do you think you can talk with us?," Cruz asked the board member.
He replied, "No."
Cruz, vice president of the Chino Valley Unified School Board, turned his back on the reporter before the board meeting started.
"We're really concerned about the remarks from Mr. Cruz made on July 16th; they were divisive, they were noninclusive," said Jim Gallagher, a parent.
It's been almost a month since Cruz made what many parents are calling a confusing 10-minute rant on a variety of topics, including vaccinations, single parents and marriage equality during the school board meeting.
Many parents and students are calling for Cruz's resignation.
"I am apart of LBGT community, I am a Latino student, I am the son of a single parent, who, by the way, came to this country illegally immigrant. I am a representative of my students," said Rolando, a student.
Cruz addressed the crowd, many wearing signs that read: "I was a single parent."
"If my comments, mainly derived from the research and news media reports, may have left you victimized, please accept my sincere apologies," said Cruz Thursday evening.
"It was from my heart of the things seeing and direction of this country that it's going towards and you may not ...," said Cruz who was abruptly cut off.
He was told: "This is segment for public comment."
One parent said, "I don't want an apology from you. I want your resignation."
After the meeting, Cruz did not say if he planned to resign.
