Only On 2: Motorist Who Captured Road Rage Incident On Cellphone Video Speaks Out
ALTADENA (CBSLA.com) — The man who captured an apparent case of road rage on cellphone video is speaking out at the same time the CHP is launching an investigation.
KCAL9's Peter Daut spoke to the driver who captured the incident Tuesday on a Pasadena freeway.
The man -- who wished to remain anonymous -- didn't want to show his face. Daut spoke to him at CHP headquarters.
The video has gone viral.
It's a story that is Only On 2.
"This guy was a madman," said the videographer.
The video shows a small car in front of a Lexus SUV. The man who photographed the scene said he witnessed the smaller car tailgating.
The smaller car then passed the SUV on the shoulder of the 134 freeway near the 2 freeway.
The driver in the smaller car slams on the brakes, causing the Lexus to nearly hit the car.
The video later shows the driver of the smaller vehicle throwing bottles at the Lexus.
"It was just stupid. The guy was just a stupid guy. There was no reason to drive like that," said the driver who captured the incident.
Eventually, the driver speeds away at 100 mph, driving on the shoulder around another car.
"I can't believe that nobody got hurt," said Manuel Rodriguez, a CHP officer.
Rodriquez says investigators used the video Friday to track down the suspect described only as a Pasadena man in his 20s.
He initially denied any wrongdoing. Rodriguez says that story quickly changed once investigators pulled out the video.
"His attitude as though he was unaware that anything that happened was dangerous," said Rodriguez.
Friday evening, the witness who recorded the video also got to tell his story to the authorities.
He told Daut he wants the irate driver to answer for his actions.
"There's something going on in that guy's head to cause him to drive like that," the driver added.
CHP investigators say they plan to speak with more witnesses, and the suspect could be charged with highway violence, reckless driving and assault with a deadly weapon.
