Ohtani Steals Home, Angels Send Yankees To 4th Straight Loss
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Shohei Ohtani stole home, Jared Walsh hit a three-run homer and the Los Angeles Angels hung on late to send the New York Yankees to their fourth straight loss, 6-4 Tuesday night.
Phil Gosselin had a two-run single for the Angels before their troublesome bullpen preserved their third straight victory. Jake Petricka got two big strikeouts to strand two Yankees in the eighth, and Raisel Iglesias pitched a perfect ninth for his 29th save.
Anthony Rizzo and Gary Sánchez homered for the Yankees, whose skid following their 13-game winning streak continued despite 10 hits at Angel Stadium.
Aaron Judge had an RBI single and Giancarlo Stanton added a sacrifice fly in the eighth, but New York (76-56) dropped eight games behind Tampa Bay (84-48) in the AL East standings.
Jameson Taillon (8-5) took his first loss in 16 starts since May 31 for the Yankees, allowing six runs on five hits and two walks.
New York also hit into five double plays, the most turned by the Angels since April 25, 2013, and the most at home since July 18, 2006.
Jimmy Herget (1-1) got the win in his Angels debut with 1 2/3 innings of one-hit relief.
Ohtani stole two bases as a part of double steals, giving him 22 steals this season — tied for sixth in the majors.
After the two-way star and David Fletcher executed a double steal in the fifth, Ohtani stole home in the sixth after Gosselin stole second, nimbly getting his hand on the plate around Sánchez's tag.
Rizzo's homer leading off the fourth inning was only his fourth for the Yankees, but it ended a 13-game homer drought since Aug. 4 during which he batted .167. Juan Lagares had time and space to rob Rizzo in right field, but mistimed his jump at a catchable ball.
Taillon retired the Angels' first nine batters before Fletcher's single in the fourth. After Ohtani walked and they executed a double steal, Walsh brought them home with his third homer in six games. Walsh, a first-time All-Star this season, is emerging from a power drought of only two homers in 32 games before this stretch.
Sánchez's solo shot in the fifth was the first homer in 21 games since July 20 for the slumping catcher.
Gosselin chased Taillon and put Los Angeles up 5-2 with a two-out single up the middle in the fifth.
