Officials Warn Of Internet Scams In Wake Of Boston Marathon Bombings
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Officials Friday warned the public to be wary of fake charities in the wake of Monday's deadly bombings at the Boston Marathon.
A statement issued by the Ventura County Sheriff's Office says hundreds of domain names were created shortly after the explosions that killed three people and left more than 180 people injured.
"Some of those registered domain names will use this as an opportunity to take advantage of people's good will by committing fraud," the statement cautioned.
Officials say many of the fraudulent websites may contain viruses or spyware.
Perpetrators may use social networking sites and even direct e-mails to dupe those wanting to offer financial support to the victims, the statement said.
