Officials Identify South Gate Man Killed In OIS
SOUTH GATE (CBS) — Authorities Friday identified the man who was fatally shot by South Gate police after he allegedly charged at officers while brandishing a knife.
The shooting occurred about 7:35 p.m. Wednesday in the 9800 block of San Miguel Avenue, said Deputy Jeff Gordon of Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau. No officers were hurt.
The man who was fatally shot was Christopher Daniel Coronel, 21, of South Gate, said Assistant Chief Ed Winter of the coroner's office.
Coronel died at the scene.
Gordon said the suspect had phoned the South Gate Police Department stating he had just stabbed himself 20 times with a knife, Gordon said.
"When the South Gate police offices arrived at the location, the suspect said that he had a gun, and then ran into the residence, closing the front door," he said.
Officers surrounded the house, and the man "ran out of the back door wielding a knife," Gordon said.
"The suspect made an attempt to gain entry into a neighbor's residence," Gordon said. "The officers used a stunbag shotgun and a Taser to try to subdue the suspect, which proved to be ineffective. When the suspect charged at the officers with the knife, an officer-involved shooting occurred."
