Marine's 2 Young Daughters In Car When He Was Fatally Shot
SAN CLEMENTE (CBS) — Two young daughters of a Camp Pendleton Marine were in the back seat of an SUV on Tuesday when a sheriff's deputy fired, fatally wounding the 31-year-old man, officials said Thursday.
Manny Levi Loggins, 31, was shot about 4:45 a.m. Tuesday, after crashing a sport-utility vehicle through a gate in the parking lot at San Clemente High School, according to Orange County sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino.
Officials did not say how close the shooting occurred to the two girls, who they said were 9 and 14 years old.
Authorities said a deputy was in his squad car working on reports when he saw Loggins speeding down the street and then turning into the parking lot, where he crashed through the gate.
The deputy pulled up behind the vehicle when it stopped and ordered Loggins out, Amormino said. Loggins -- who was not in military uniform -- did so but reportedly started walking toward the football field, ignoring the deputy's commands to stop.
It was unclear what triggered the deputy-involved shooting, which occurred when Loggins turned around to walk back toward the SUV, according to Amormino.
Loggins was taken to Mission Hospital, where he was pronounced dead later that day.
As is protocol in officer-involved shootings, the deputy has been placed on administrative leave, Amormino said.
The District Attorney's Office is investigating the shooting.
