Official: Marine Found Dead In SoCal Barracks Not A Recruit

SAN DIEGO (CBS) — An investigation was underway Monday after a Marine was found dead in his Southland military barracks.

KNX 1070's Tom Reopelle reports the U.S. Navy is investigating the death, but officials said it is unclear whether the death was a homicide.

The unidentified Marine was found inside a barracks room at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD), a training facility located near Lindbergh Field in San Diego.

MCRD spokesperson Janice Hagar would not immediately identify the Marine, but said he was a staff member and not a recruit.

"He was permanent personnel assigned here to the Depot...it wasn't a recruit," said Hagar.

Hagar said that it would be at least another 24 hours before additional information will be released pending notification of next of kin.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is investigating the death, which Hagar said is "standard procedure anytime that there's a death or serious injury".
