Officers Shut Down Illegal Street Race In Carson
CARSON (CBSLA.com) — Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies and California Highway patrol officers shut down an illegal street race at 190th and Figueroa streets early Saturday morning, the latest example of a growing problem in several Southland communities.
Several agencies worked together to break up the street racing event, with the Sheriff's Department providing photos that show the scene where 11 people were arrested, 17 more cited, and eight vehicles impounded. They relied on air support, ground units and even social media to shut down the race.
"We've had a large influx of street racers coming in the areas," sheriff's Sgt. Dean Docuyanan told KCAL9's Bobby Kaple on Saturday night. "We estimated approximately 150 to 200 vehicles at one time. These kinds of activities can cause collisions, injuries, and in worst cases, fatalities."
Kaple said signs of street racing were not difficult to spot in Carson, with hundreds of skid marks in the middle of Figueroa near 190th from all of the doughnuts being done there.
"You can hear it sometimes at night if you live in the area up here," said Carson resident Mike Johnson. "It can be kind of dangerous with back there. No supervision, a lot of people getting hurt. There are usually a lot of bystanders so anything could happen with that."
Johnson and other Carson residents said industrial areas in the city seem to attract the most street racers because of the long stretches of straight roads. At times, streets are completely blocked, usually in the middle of the night.
Earlier this week, a woman was killed during a similar illegal street race in Paramount.
