OC Prosecutors Oppose Parole For Man Who Arranged Friend's Murder

SANTA ANA (AP) — Orange County prosecutors are opposing parole for a man who arranged his friend's murder during a 1982 plane flight and threw his body into the ocean.

The district attorney's office says 62-year-old Lawrence Cowell has shown no remorse, assaulted people while on bail and is a continuing danger. A prosecutor and the victims' parents will argue against his release during a Tuesday hearing at a state prison in Blythe.

Cowell is serving 25 years to life for Scott Campbell's murder during a possible drug-related robbery. Authorities say he took his childhood friend up in a Cessna and had an accomplice kill him. The men then battered his face to draw sharks and threw the body from the plane near Catalina Island.

The accomplice, Donald DiMascio, is serving a life sentence.
