OC Pharmacist Indicted For Funding Terrorist Operation In Pakistan
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A Turkish woman living in Orange County is facing federal terrorism charges after she reportedly sent money to fund anti-American attacks in Pakistan.
Oytun Ayse Mihalik, 39, of La Palma was indicted Thursday on charges of providing material to support terrorists. Mihalik is a lawful permanent resident of the United States, employed as a pharmacist.
According to court documents, Mihalik sent a total of $2,050 in three Western Union wire transfers over a three week period at the end of 2010 and the beginning of 2011.
The money was to be used to carry out attacks against American service members overseas, Department of Justice officials said.
Mihalik is also accused of making false statements in a matter involving international terrorism.
She was arrested on Aug. 27 trying to board a one-way flight to Turkey, DOJ officials said.
Mihalik faces a maximum 23 years in prison if convicted.
A trial date has been set for Feb. 14.
