OC Clerk Issues Twice As Many Marriage Licenses
SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com) — Orange County saw a spike in marriages Monday, according to an official in the marriage license department.
Christina Aguilar of the Orange County Clerk-Recorder's office said about 70 civil ceremonies were performed Monday, at the county clerk's offices in Fullerton, Laguna Hills, and Santa Ana.
The average number of licenses issued on Mondays usually numbers around 30 between the three county offices.
"The mood's been great, and there's been a steady flow all day," Aguilar said.
Though staff are not permitted to track how many licenses go to same-sex couples versus heterosexual couples, Aguilar said the majority of marriage licenses went to same-sex couples.
Monday was the first chance for such couples to marry following the U.S. Supreme Court refused to take up Proposition 8, referring the case back to a lower federal court's decision that found the law unconstitutional.
