O.C. Parents At Common Core Meeting Seek Greater Local Control
ORANGE COUNTY (CBSLA.com) — Parents showed up in force Monday to give a panel of experts an earful regarding controversy over the Common Core education program.
KCAL9's Stacey Butler spoke with parents who said they are upset with the state's education initiative program and feel the program is unfair.
Several parents explained the state standards initiative has caused their children to get sick, become stressed and to even fall behind with work.
"If our children are not able to reach the levels in math that are necessary to get into these high quality schools, the seats will not be made available to them," explained MJ Noor of the Honors Parent Association.
Many objections have to do with federal groups trying to change education standards across Orange County.
The board is expected to take precedent toward setting a vote to try to shift the control of curriculum from the federal level back to the individual school districts.
"If they decide to allow the choice to be given to local school districts," said Brad Dacus of the Pacific Justice Institute, "we are convinced that other counties in California will choose to do the same."
A board of education member told Butler that a private meeting will be held around this time next month.
In that meeting, the board plans to seriously talk about suing the state and federal government to return control to the local school districts.
