Norwalk Man Accused Of Stealing Mercedes In Apparent Botched Burglary
SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com) — A Norwalk man was behind bars Thursday on suspicion of breaking into a Santa Ana couple's home, stealing their new Mercedes Benz and driving the vehicle back to his mobile home park.
Michael Anthony Skofield, 29, faced burglary and auto theft charges after a husband and wife were awakened about 10:50 p.m. Tuesday night in their three-story home in the 600 block of East Jeanette Lane, according to Santa Ana Police.
After hearing their bedroom door open and shut, the couple began exiting their home when they heard their garage door open and observed their 2014 Mercedes Benz leaving the garage, police said.
The suspect likely realized the residents were home and grabbed the keys to the couple's car and drove off, Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.
The couple watched as the suspect drove their vehicle south on Main from Memory Lane before contacting the police, police said.
Officers then tracked the vehicle's GPS location to Imperial Village, a mobile home park located at 11101 E. Imperial Highway in the city of Norwalk.
Skofield was identified by the victims as the person who broke into their home and stole personal items and their vehicle, according to police. The vehicle and some of the victim's property were recovered.
He was booked at Santa Ana Police Department Jail on suspicion of burglary and auto theft. Bail amount was not immediately available.
