Police responded to a call just after 3:00 a.m. when a resident heard a commotion in his home near Lankershim and Oxnard, according to LAPD. Lt. Brian Wendling.
The resident told police the burglar apparently stole some cognac from the house before running off and leaving his bicycle behind.
Officers finally spotted the suspect when he returned for the bike after breaking into a second location, Wendling said.
"The officers laid in wait for him to return looking for his bicycle," he said.
After a brief pursuit, K-9 search dogs finally led officers to the unidentified man, who was hiding on an 12-feet-high exterior balcony of an apartment under a sofa cover.
He was taken into police custody and likely faces multiple burglary charges.
