No. 1 Overall Pick Jared Goff To Start Season As Rams' Third-String QB

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — With the final preseason game in the books, No.1 overall pick Jared Goff will begin the season serving as the Rams' third-string quarterback.

The starting job as of week 1 belongs to Case Keenum, and it looks like Goff will also be sitting behind Sean Mannion on the depth chart, according to coach Jeff Fisher.

After the Rams finished up their final preseason game against the Vikings in which they lost 27-25, Fisher in his post-game presser stated to reporters that Goff will be the third-string QB on the depth chart.

In a Q&A after the game, coach Fisher talked about Goff's development in the preseason.

"He's much better now than he was when we started. He has made significant progress. He's comfortable. He understands things. He has progressed," Fisher told the Orange County Register's Rich Hammond.

Thursday night, Goff started for the Rams, and orchestrated an impressive opening touchdown drive, highlighted by a 30-yard read-option pass to Bradley Marquez, but then things took a turn for the worse.

The first overall pick proceeded to overthrow his receivers three times, a throw short of a first down, and muffed a snap inside the team's 10-yard line on the the following next five third-down plays.

Goff ended up finishing his first preseason 22-49 (44.9%) for 232 yards (4.73 yards per attempt), two touchdowns, two interceptions, three fumbles, and a 55.8 passer rating.

Despite L.A. fans being disappointed that the team's quarterback of the future will most likely be serving a red-shirt season after being selected first overall, he still has more than enough time to work on his issues.
