Nike Releases 'Back To The Future' Shoe

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Nike is going back to the future.

The shoe giant's head designer Tinker Hatfield Thursday debuted replicas of the Air Mag 2015 sneakers worn by Marty McFly 22 years ago in "Back to the Future II."

Michael J. Fox also introduced the shoes to America Thursday night on the "Late Show with David Letterman."

Last year, the company patented a design for the shoe with three lighting devices that operate on batteries. The kicks are also rechargeable and will stay lit for five hours.

The shoe's original patent called for power laces, or as Nike called it, "an automatic fastening system." But plans for that, were later dropped.

Sneaker and movie fans have urged the company to create the shoe for years.

Nike released a video online earlier this week to create buzz about the high-tops.

A new short was also produced by the shoemaker titled, "It's About Time." It stars Christopher Lloyd as Dr. Emmett Brown, Kevin Durant, and the shoe's designer, Tinker Hatfield.

Nike has released 1,500 pairs of the Air Mag 2015 sneaker that will be auctioned on eBay. All of the proceeds will benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation, benefiting Parkinson's Disease research.

According to TMZ, the first pair auctioned off Thursday night went for $37,500 to a British rapper named Tinie Tempah.

Fox played McFly in the 1989 classic film where the Delorean took him to 2015.
