Newsom's Win Keeps Calif. Political Future Afloat
SACRAMENTO (AP) — San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom is defying pundits who thought he was too liberal even for California.
The mayor best-known for opening City Hall to same-sex weddings won decisively last week to be the state's next lieutenant governor. The win has rekindled prospects of a future bid for governor or the U.S. Senate.
Two years ago, Newsom had been a focal point of the Proposition 8 campaign to ban gay marriage. The ban raised questions about whether Newsom would be too closely associated with gay marriage.
Newsom says in an interview with The Associated Press that his win was a testament that voters can disagree with him on some issues but still vote for him.
Newsom demurs on his political future, saying he's focused on repairing the state.
