Newlywed Clings To Life After Being Struck By Vehicle In Canyon Country
CANYON COUNTRY (CBSLA.com) — A 26-year-old woman married less than two weeks ago is clinging to life after being struck by a car in Canyon Country Tuesday evening.
Kari Nay remains in critical condition at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital.
A 65-year-old pedestrian struck by the same vehicle was declared dead at the scene. The deceased was identified as Munir Jeryous Albichara, Nay's neighbor.
The two were hit by a Toyota Corolla on Sierra Highway about 8:20 p.m., according to officials.
Kari Kennedy married Kyle Nay a week and a half ago.
A distraught groom talked Thursday to KCAL9's Peter Daut. It's a story that is Only On 9.
"It's one of the worst situations I could have ever imagined," Kyle said.
He told Daut he is already making good on his vow to be with his wife through sickness and in health.
"I spent my honeymoon in the hospital helping take care of my wife," he said.
Kyle happened upon the crash moments after it happened.
"It was chaos," he said. "I didn't have any idea what was going on. Unfortunately, I see my wife laying there, motionless, in the street."
Kyle said he understands it was just an accident and he is not angry at the driver. He is more focused on his wife getting well and on their 7-year-old son, Degan.
Kari's employer and co-workers helped establish a GoFundMe account for Nay and Degan.
Kyle said he he is grateful for the outpouring of love and support from family and friends.
"Everyone who has ever met her is doing everything they can in their power, and I appreciate it so much," he said.
Investigators interviewed the Corolla driver, but no arrest was made.
Daut said more than a dozen of Albichara's friends and family gathered near the scene of the crash to light candles. They told him they were too devastated to speak. He leaves behind four children.
The investigation is continuing.
