New Smartphone App Helps Find Lost Dogs

ENCINO (CBSLA.com) — A free iPhone application helps find lost dogs.

The app, called Finding Rover, uses facial recognition technology to help people identify a missing dog.

App founder John Polimeno said, "I found the University of Utah's research and development department …these amazing scientists…who actually took on the project. After one year of research and development, we created facial recognition for dogs using your mobile phone."

Polimeno said the app's process is simple. A dog owner must first register their pet by taking a photo of it.

If the dog somehow goes missing, the app will search to find matches of dogs that have been found in the area.

Also, if someone who has the app finds a lost dog, all they need to do is snap a picture. If the dog is identified as missing through the software, the finder will get the dog owner's contact information.

The app also sends a lost or found notification to users in a 10-mile radius.
