New Route Unveiled For 2011 L.A. Marathon
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Honda L.A. Marathon organizers unveiled a new "Stadium to the Sea" route for the 2011 race.
Dodger Stadium will remain the starting location and Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica as the finish, but parts of the route in between will be rerouted, including loops through Chinatown and Little Tokyo shortly after the start.
Marathon organizers believe the new course will give runners a unique opportunity to experience the best of Los Angeles.
"With the addition of Chinatown and Little Tokyo, the Stadium to the Sea course will show runners even more of what makes Los Angeles so great," marathon Chief Operating Officer Nick Curl said.
The revised "Stadium to the Sea 2.0" route will pass Los Angeles City Hall at mile 3, Grauman's Chinese Theater at mile 11, the nearby Capitol Records building, the Sunset Strip and Rodeo Drive at mile 17.
Next year's race is set for March 20. Last year marked a major change in the route, which traditionally started and ended in downtown Los Angeles.
The route was modified to eliminate a loop around Dodger Stadium at the start, so runners would run through Chinatown and Little Tokyo.
The finish will be on Ocean at California Avenue, three blocks north of the 2010 finish line, to give runners more recovery space.
Registration for the race has begun and organizers expect it to sell out.
