New Pool, Skateboard Park Coming To Lawndale
LAWNDALE (CBS) — Kids and families in Lawndale will soon have a new pool, skateboard park and splash pad at the Alondra Park on Manhattan Beach Blvd.
"I heard that it's going to open soon and they're going to make it like a big water slide," said Kaitlyn Rodriguez, a 7-year-old from Lawndale.
The 87-acre county park is undergoing a $16.5 million expansion program that also will include new restrooms and a picnic area.
"The state of the art pool will be set up for competition swimming," said Russ Guiney, director of Los Angeles Parks and Recreation. "It's going to have great amenities for the kids and families."
Luis Pinillos has been watching the construction process for the past 18 months. "All the people, all my neighbors are very, very happy," he said.
Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas was instrumental in spearheading the project eight years ago and in acquiring the funds.
"I'm as excited as those youngsters are who are anticipating running through that park, swimming and taking advantage of the new recreational facilities," said Ridley-Thomas.
Instrumental in spearheading the project eight years ago and acquiring the funds. "We just decided that the El Camino village, the surrounding areas deserved a first rate recreational complex."
An exact date has not yet been set for the parks grand reopening, but kids in Lawndale could be swimming in a new pool in a couple of weeks.
