New LAUSD Layoff Policy Hailed As Model For Other Districts
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A proposed agreement that would change the way teachers are laid off in the nation's second-largest school district is being hailed as a landmark that could pave the way for changes in layoff policies across the nation.
Education experts said Wednesday that Los Angeles Unified School District's settlement with the American Civil Liberties Union that would shield the districts' lowest peforming schools from layoffs and cap layoffs at other schools is a good compromise.
Emily Cohen, district policy director of National Council of Teacher Quality, says the new system will provide a model for other districts in similar situations.
The agreement must be approved by a judge.
