Music Video Parodies Help Find Homes For Adoptable Southland Pets

BURBANK (CBSLA.com) — A pet-themed YouTube channel showcases music video parodies featuring man's best friend as a way to find homes for adoptable Southland animals.

The Pet Collective, a Burbank-based company that launched in May 2012, has produced nearly 750 videos (the "petodies" are the most popular) to celebrate pets through informative and creative content.

"There's a massive problem in the state with adoption and euthanization and so on. Our mission is to spread awareness," said The Pet Collective's Thomas Maynard.

Their latest hit, "The Fresh Pup of Bel-Air", which has a cameo by the one and only James Avery aka Uncle Phil from "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air", went viral within 24 hours.

"Reaction to 'The Fresh Pup' so far has been absolutely insane," said Maynard.

A parody of the song "Thrift Shop" by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis has been seen by nearly 300,000 people.

Although producing and directing a video can be difficult, adding dogs to the mix made things more challenging.

"The hardest part was keeping the hat on the dog, really," said Nick Fabiano of The Pet Collective.

At least half of the pets in the videos find homes, including "The Fresh Pup" who now lives in Hesperia.
