Mulholland Bridge Demolition To Begin Early Saturday Morning
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Crews are already preparing for demolition work slated to begin when the 405 Freeway shuts down at midnight Saturday.
A four-foot layer of dirt will go under the Mulholland Bridge just two hours after the freeway is closed.
Workers will then pull apart the bridge, starting with the center span. Using jackhammers and saws, concrete and rebar will be broken down, hauled away and recycled.
The demolition will continue through Sunday when workers have scheduled extra time for any potential delays or problems.
Lanes will be shut down overnight as needed for work to continue, but are scheduled to reopen early Monday morning.
City officials are asking residents to check out local deals or to just stay home for the weekend. For those who do need to travel, bus and subway services will be free.
The Mulholland Bridge was built in 1959, just two years before the 405 Freeway was built.
