Motorcyclist, 31, Killed After Freeway Pursuit With CHP
CERRITOS (CBS) — A 31-year-old motorcyclist was killed Saturday morning when he evaded CHP officers on a chase, ran a red light and struck a car.
The motorcyclist, from Fontana, died on the pavement in Cerritos, CHP officers said.
The 77 year-old man who was driving the Ford Focus that was struck by the motorcycle suffered minor injuries.
The chase began about 12:45 a.m., when a CHP officer on routine patrol tried to stop the 31-year-old speeding on the southbound Santa Ana (5) Freeway. The rider, on a 2007 Kawasaki, refused to stop, according to a CHP statement.
The motorcyclist exited at Carmenita Road and the chasing CHP officer lost sight of him as the bike disappeared to the south on Carmenita.
Moments later, the same motorcycle sped through a red light at Alondra Boulevard, where it smacked into the side of a westbound Ford sedan driven by the 77-year-old man, who is from Norwalk.
The motorcyclist was thrown from his bike and onto the eastbound lanes of Alondra Boulevard. He died at the scene.
His name is being withheld until notification of his next of kin, the CHP said.
