Mother Questioned After Dead Newborn's Found In Trash

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles police say an 18-year-old woman will be questioned after her newborn baby was found dead in a wastebasket.

Lt. John Romero says officers were sent to a hospital Monday to see a patient who'd recently given birth but had no baby. Romero says an investigation led officers to a North Hollywood home where they found the body of a newborn boy in a wastebasket.

Romero says the woman gave birth last Friday. An autopsy will determine when and how the child died.

The woman remained hospitalized Tuesday and hasn't been arrested. Her name wasn't released.

Romero notes that California passed a Safely Surrendered Baby Law in 2001 that allows parents to give up babies at fire stations, hospitals and other locations without fear of prosecution.
