More Details Emerge In Fatal Deputy-Involved Shooting In West Covina
WEST COVINA (CBSLA.com) — Authorities Friday continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding a fatal deputy-involved shooting in an unincorporated area of West Covina.
The intense altercation between LA County Sheriff's deputies and a home invasion robbery suspect unfolded Thursday evening in the 19100 block of E. Elberland Street.
Prior to the shooting, authorities say the suspect was being pursued in connection with a home invasion robbery at an upscale home in Walnut.
After the suspect allegedly fled, deputies tracked his black Dodge Neon. He reportedly jumped out at a nearby strip mall after slamming into another car.
On foot, the suspect ended up in the backyard of a home where he was fatally shot.
On Friday, the homeowner declined to comment on camera. He told KCAL9's Tom Wait that he was not home when the incident unfolded but that his dogs were.
A nearby resident told Wait, "I'm pretty shocked that it happened. It's right next door and it apparently was at gunpoint so that sort of shook me yesterday night."
It remains unclear what prompted deputies to open fire or whether the suspect was armed. The suspect died at the scene.
Authorities said it's believed the suspect and victims weren't acquainted.
No further information was known.
