Montebello Police Chase Man Into Catholic School After He Allegedly Shoots His Mother
MONTEBELLO (CBSLA.com) — Police officers shot and wounded a man reportedly wielding a shotgun at a Catholic school in Montebello Friday.
The shooting occurred around 5:30 p.m. at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church School, at 820 N. Garfield Avenue, prompting the campus to be placed on lockdown, according to Deputy Don Walker of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
The incident began around 3 p.m. when someone reported that an assault with a deadly weapon had taken place in the 300 block of Wilber Place.
"When officers arrived, they discovered a female victim who had been shot in the upper torso by her 24-year-old son," Walker said.
The woman was taken to a hospital in critical condition and police began searching for her son, who had fled before officers arrived, Walker said.
Police managed to track down the suspect just as he was getting into a vehicle driven by another man.
The driver led officers on a short pursuit that ended in front of the Catholic school.
"The suspect exited from the passenger side of the vehicle with a shotgun, this is when the first officer-involved shooting occurred," Walker said. "The suspect then ran onto the school property. While on the school grounds, a second and third officer-involved shooting occurred."
As shots rung out, a group of students and teachers participating in after-school activities huddled in an auditorium. The entire school was placed on lockdown.
The suspect was shot and taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Walker said. His identity was not disclosed.
No one else was injured.
A shotgun was recovered from the scene.
Meanwhile, the suspect driver fled the scene and has not been located.
Sheriff's homicide detectives are assisting Montebello police in the shooting investigation. The incident is also being investigated by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office and the County of Los Angeles Office of Independent Review.
