MLS Wants Fans' Help To Pick Team Name, Logo For New 'LA Football Club'

HOLLYWOOD (CBSLA.com) — The city of Los Angeles may have lost one Major League Soccer team after Chivas USA disbanded this week, but another one is on its way, officials announced Thursday.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber was on hand at Siren Studios on Sunset Boulevard to introduce the new "Los Angeles Football Club" - which will begin playing in 2017 in a new soccer stadium in the greater Los Angeles area built specifically for the team. - were announced by.

Franchise officials are reaching out to Southland soccer fans to decide the team's permanent name and logo, the club announced on its Twitter page.

KNX 1070's Claudia Peschiutta reports the new team's ownership group will be headed by Vietnamese venture capitalist Henry Nguyen and film producer Peter Guber, who is also a part-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Lakers legend Earvin "Magic" Johnson, U.S. women's soccer great Mia Hamm Garciaparra, and renowned motivational speaker Tony Robbins, were also named as members of the investment group.

Nguyen said of all the challenges facing the new club, perhaps the biggest is where to build a stadium.

"We have the resources, we have the experience, we have the capital to do this," he said. "The important thing for us now is to reach out to our constituency here in the Greater Los Angeles market and really figure out where's the best place for us to be."

Chivas played for 10 years at StubHub Center in Carson, a facility the team shared with the Los Angeles Galaxy.

The struggling franchise, which was purchased by the league in February, played its final game on Sunday in a 1-0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes.
