Microwave Oven Fire Damages 3 Apartment Units At Senior Citizen Complex

TORRANCE (CBS) — A fire that started in a microwave oven Sunday ended up doing damage to three units in a Torrance apartment complex, a fire official said.

The fire was reported at 4:25 p.m. at 22635 Maple Ave., said Steve Deuel of the Torrance Fire Department.

"When firefighters arrived on scene of this senior citizen residential complex they found the attic space above the middle apartment unit heavily involved with fire that was spreading in both directions," Deuel said.

Deuel said the flames also burned through to the surface of the wood shingled roof and was being driven by a moderate afternoon breeze.

With 35 firefighters on the scene, the spread of the blaze was limited, Deuel said.

One resident had to be rescued, Deuel said, and three units were damaged, their occupants displaced.

"After knocking down the fire, firefighters remained on scene salvaging the many personal belongings inside the involved units for those residents not home at the time of the fire," Deuel said.

No injuries were reported.
