Metro Promotion Offers Discounts At Local Businesses For 'Carmageddon 2'

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — More than 300 businesses across Los Angeles are offering discounts at their stores during this weekend's 405 freeway closure.

It's all part of Metro's "Eat, Shop, and Play Locally" promotion for Carmageddon II, which will close a 10-mile stretch of the 405 between the 10 and 101 freeways for 53 hours starting Saturday.

Shops, like Nigel Beauty Emporium in North Hollywood, hope residents choose to stay in the area to get discounted deals ranging from 10 to 50 percent off.

"We'd like to get a lot of locals and a lot of people in the vicinity. So they can come this way and shop," said worker, David Hernandez.

Hernandez said the beauty retailer will give customers 20 percent off everything in the store.

Silver Lining Resale Boutique in Culver City upped the ante.

"We're having 40.5 percent off everything that's already on clearance," said business owner, Argie Plakas.

For some of the deals, a resident will need a Metro pass to redeem the savings. Everyone else just needs to say the word "Carmageddon."

Last year, Metro offered free rides on select lines throughout the Valley and on the West Side, but an official said singling out certain geographical locations for free or reduced fares violates federal law.

The official also said the company can't afford to offer free rides to all 1.5 million daily riders.
