Mayor Garcetti Headed For Climate Change Summit In Paris
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Mayor Eric Garcetti was set to leave for Paris Wednesday to attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference.
Garcetti is scheduled to take part in the talks known as COP21, where more than 100 world leaders are working to reach what they say would be a legally binding agreement on goals for reducing greenhouse gas and other emissions that cause climate change.
The mayor will serve as one of 13 members of the Steering Committee of the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, according to Garcetti's office.
He told KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO in addition to participating in the climate summit, he'll also have a chance to learn more about the terrorist attacks in Paris last month "to ensure Los Angeles is as safe as can be."
"Those two threats of international terrorism and, of course, of global climate change are probably the two biggest threats we face both in the city and in the world today," said Garcetti.
In September, Garcetti hosted the U.S.-China Climate Leaders Summit, where he, Gov. Jerry Brown and other U.S. officials signed off on agreements with Chinese officials to set verifiable goals and chart a course to limit greenhouse gas emissions in the two nations.
