Mayor Garcetti Begins Annual Two Weeks Of Duty As Lieutenant With Navy Reserve

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Mayor Eric Garcetti began his required two weeks of U.S. Navy Reserve training on Monday.

The mayor will not be required to leave the Southland during his training.

Garcetti, a lieutenant in the Navy Reserve, enlisted in 2005 and is an intelligence officer.

Garcetti's two-week training period, which is required of reservists each year, is set to be completed on August 30, according to mayoral spokesman Yusef Robb.

"Mayor Garcetti will be able to fully perform his city duties during this time, including his pursuit of the best possible DWP contract for ratepayers," Robb said. "He will not be traveling. He will fulfill his Navy reserve obligations in Bell and may also serve at other L.A.-area locations."

Garcetti attended meetings at City Hall early on Monday, and he will continue to do so throughout the duration of his training, according to Robb.

Garcetti, who was also assigned to train in Bell for a weekend in July, spends an average of 40 days each year on duty with the U.S. Navy Reserve. While his eight year commitment with the Navy concludes later this year, Garcetti has expressed an interest in continuing his service in the Reserve.
