Maya Angelou Community High School Remembers Late Poet

SOUTH LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Students and staff at Maya Angelou Community High School in South Los Angeles are remembering the eloquent poet who passed away Wednesday.

KCAL9's Cristy Fajardo reports that the school held a moment of silence for its namesake.

The principal said he hopes to do more in coming weeks to reflect on the 86-year-old's legendary life. A life so inspiring, the administration said it was the students who voted for the school's name.

"I know some of her story, like how she had to go through all these obstacles, and at the end, she was proud of it," student Laura Lopez said.

"She was a very great woman. She was inspiring to our school. That's the reason we chose Dr. Maya Angelou," a student said.

Angelou never walked through the school doors.

The principal said by the time the school was named two years ago, Angelou was no longer up to traveling.
