Mark Cuban Donates $1 Million In Order To Keep Dallas LGBT Community Safe
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The often outspoken Dallas Mavericks owner is making headlines for something other than his comments.
Mark Cuban has pledged to donate $1 million in order to fund the Dallas Police Department's presence in the city's most populous LGBT community.
The donation comes after the worst mass shooting in US history took place at a gay nightclub in Orlando.
The $1 million in funds will be designated for around 16,000 hours of overtime pay to enhance the counter-terrorism efforts by Dallas police.
These funds will lead to an increase in police presence in the city's Oak Lawn neighborhood, which features many of the area's LGBT attractions and venues.
Cuban was one of many to openly support Jason Collins at the time he became the first openly-gay player in the NBA.
"I hope this opens the door for other players to be honest about who they are," Cuban said of Collins at the time.
"The Dallas Police Department thanks Mark Cuban," said Dallas Police Chief David Brown.
"These funds will be used primarily to protect the LGBT community. We will earmark and track the expenditure of these funds to ensure its effective use in creating a safe environment."
