Marines: Blaring Siren Near Nuclear Power Plant Under Repair
CAMP PENDLETON (AP) — A malfunctioning siren on the Camp Pendleton Marine base near the San Onofre nuclear power plant got the attention of Southern California residents.
The siren in the San Mateo Point housing area sounded early Wednesday in the northern San Diego County area near San Clemente, raising concerns there might be an emergency at the twin-reactor plant operated by Southern California Edison.
Edison spokesman Gil Alexander says there was no emergency at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station and the plant is operating normally. He says Edison crews examined the 50 sirens it manages and there was no inadvertent sounding of the sirens.
A Marine Corps news release says it was a base siren, part of Camp Pendleton's Mass Notification System, and repair crews were dispatched.
