Man Who Shot At Deputy Had No Connection To Detectives' Investigation

LYNWOOD (CBSLA.com) — Authorities have identified a man who was fatally shot after a two-hour standoff prompted by a deputy-involved shooting.

Kerry Eric Wesson, 53, was fatally shot after running out of the apartment he was holed up in in the 12000 block of El Segundo Boulevard. Wesson was holding a semiautomatic pistol in his hand, sheriff's spokesman Deputy Kelvin Moody said.

According to a statement issued by Los Angeles County Sheriff's officials, Wesson left his home and shot at two detectives who were walking away after having followed up on a criminal case at a residence in Lynwood. One detective was hit in the shoulder but was able to return fire.

Wesson went back into his home, several more gunshots were heard, and then he barricaded himself inside, Moody said.

A SWAT team was called out, employing several armored vehicles and a battering ram that ripped away gates from the front of the complex and the front of the residence before breaking down the door. Footage from SKY9 showed a robot moving into the apartment to gain visual access for deputies.

During the standoff, officials say Wesson fired his weapon several times. About 4:20 p.m., Wesson ran out of the apartment holding his weapon and was shot by deputies.

Sheriff's officials say he was pronounced dead at the scene, and his weapon was recovered by deputies.

No deputies were injured. The injured detective, a 17-year veteran of the force in his 30s, is stable at a hospital.

According to sheriff's officials, it was determined there was no connection between Wesson and the investigation the detectives conducted at the scene.
