Man Who Killed L.A. Store Owner Won't Face Death

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A man who robbed and killed the owner of a South Los Angeles liquor store won't face the death penalty after two juries deadlocked over his sentence.

Prosecutors announced Monday they will drop efforts to have Larry Stewart sentenced to death for the 2005 murder. The 51-year-old Stewart will face life in prison without chance of parole when he's sentenced next month.

Stewart was convicted of murder, robbery and other crimes for attacking 58-year-old Sang Yun Kim. The store owner was beaten, choked with his own belt and burned with bleach.

Two separate juries deadlocked 8-4 and 11-1 in favor of a death sentence for Stewart.
