Man Fatally Struck By Ambulance After 2-Car Crash
BALDWIN PARK (CBS) — A San Dimas man who got out of his pickup truck following a two-vehicle crash in Baldwin Park was fatally struck by an ambulance, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Eduardo Montano, 22, was driving a 1992 Toyota Tacoma faster than 65 mph at 5:12 a.m. on the eastbound San Bernardino (10) Freeway, just west of Puente Avenue, when the Tacoma rear-ended a 2010 Nissan Sentra driven by 42-year-old Juan Vgalde of Baldwin Park, according to the CHP.
The Sentra came to a stop in the right lane and Vgalde turned on his hazard lights, as the pickup truck crashed into the center divider.
Michael Lopez, 23, of West Covina, was driving an ambulance about 65 mph when he saw the emergency lights on Vgalde's Sentra and steered into the far left lane to avoid the disabled vehicle and struck Montano, who had gotten out of his Tacoma and was standing to the left of the truck in the left lane, according to the CHP.
When Lopez saw the Tacoma he swerved to avoid it, but the ambulance struck the left side of the Tacoma, and Montano, who died at the scene, the CHP reported.
No one else was injured in the crash.
