Man Sentenced To Death In 1988 Rape And Murder Of Pregnant OC Woman
SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com) — A 43-year-old man was sentenced to death Friday in the rape and fatal stabbing of a pregnant newlywed more than 25 years ago.
Jason Michael Balcom was linked the the July 1988 murder of Malinda Gibbons through DNA while serving time in a Michigan prison for another rape.
Gibbons, a new resident to Costa Mesa by way of Utah, was unpacking her new apartment while her husband was at work when she was attacked.
Balcom bound the woman, stuffed a tie in her mouth, raped her and repeatedly stabbed her in the chest, prosecutors said.
Prosecutors say Balcom was also responsible for another rape in Orange County just days after Gibbons' death.
