Man Sentenced To 17 Years For Brutal Kidnapping
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Los Angeles man has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for participating in the brutal kidnapping of a man who was shot, beaten and held captive for days while his tormentors tried to negotiate a $1 million ransom payment.
A federal judge on Tuesday also ordered 34-year-old Suren Garibyan to serve five years' probation.
Garibyan had pleaded guilty to kidnapping and conspiracy to commit kidnapping.
Prosecutors say he and two men kidnapped the victim in 2009. During a struggle, the victim was shot and shocked with a Taser. Over the course of his 5-day captivity, the assailants forced the victim to call his family to demand the ransom money.
Garibyan's co-defendants were convicted of the same charges and face 30-year terms when they are sentenced in July.
