Police say Trujillo armed himself with a kitchen knife during an argument with his son's mother at his Covina home.
She was outside with the man's brother when the toddler was stabbed.
He died during surgery, and Trujillo was booked on murder charges after being treated for self-inflicted stab wounds.
Police can't say what prompted the man to take such drastic measures.
