Man Nabbed For Camera In Starbucks Restroom Now May Face Stalking Charges
GLENDORA (CBS) The San Dimas man arrested for putting a hidden recording device inside a Starbucks restroom is also being investigated for allegedly stalking a college student, police announced Thursday.
"In the weeks leading up to the Starbucks incident," William Zafra Velasco "allegedly stalked a 21-year-old local female college student for several days, and then broke into her apartment and stole some of her underwear," Glendora police Lt. Tim Staab said.
A search of the 25-year-old's home turned up women's underwear sealed in individual plastic baggies, Staab said.
Velasco was arrested on suspicion of placing the camera, disguised as part of a coat hook, in the restroom in front of a toilet at the coffee shop at 1832 E. Route 66, Staab said.
Police have identified 11 victims from the Starbucks footage and are working to identify 34 others to aid in Velasco's prosecution, Staab said.
The camera was active just two days, April 14-15, and Velasco allegedly downloaded the recorded images to a laptop computer in his car about once per hour, Staab said.
Children were among the 45 known victims, Staab said.
Velasco, who is free on $50,000 bail, is due in Citrus Superior Court in West Covina on June 21 to face a misdemeanor charge of secretly recording the victims for sexual gratification.
Glendora police Chief Rob Castro and Assemblyman Tim Donnelly, R-Hesperia, have scheduled a 10 a.m. news conference for Friday, when Donnelly is expected to announce a bill that would make the crime a felony.
