Man Killed In Officer-Involved Shooting In Gardena
GARDENA (CBSLA.com) — Authorities Sunday said a man has been killed in an officer-involved shooting in Gardena.
The shooting in the 1600 block of Redondo Beach Boulevard occurred at 2:30 a.m.
Investigators say police received a call about a report of a theft of a bicycle near a CVS/pharmacy store nearby.
Arriving officers say they saw two individuals matching the description with a bicycle.
Officers stopped those individuals. That's when officers say a third person in his late 30s appeared and tried to intervene.
"He started to walk towards the officers. At that point, officers believed that he was reaching for a weapon and an officer-involved shooting occurred. He was shot multiple times. He was pronounced dead here at the scene," said Lt. Eddie Hernandez of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
Authorities say as many as four officers with the Gardena Police Department opened fire.
One of the individuals originally detained was also shot. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment of one gunshot wound. He is expected to survive. A third person has been taken in for questioning. No officers were hurt.
The identity of the deceased has not been released. Officials say no weapon was recovered at the scene.
An investigation is ongoing.
