Man Fatally Shot By Deputies In Lakewood

LAKEWOOD (CBSLA.com) — A man was fatally shot by deputies Monday after a deputy became crushed between his driver's side door and another vehicle.

The shooting happened about 10:40 a.m. in the 5500 block of Adenmoor Avenue after deputies responded to the scene to investigate a report of a mentally ill person who had not taken his medication, Los Angeles County Sheriff's officials said.

For an unknown reason, the suspect drove forward and hit a sheriff''s patrol vehicle head on and deputies used pepper spray and a stun gun in an attempt to coax him out. While attempting to get the suspect out, a deputy became crushed between the suspect's driver side door and another vehicle, prompting the other deputies to open fire.

The suspect, whose identity was not released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neighbors, who described the area as quiet as Mayberry, said the suspect was the youngest of nine children of a woman who had lived in the neighborhood for 40 years.

The deputy who became crushed was taken to a hospital to be treated for bruises and contusions.
