Man Described As Transient Killed In Police Shooting In Northridge
NORTHRIDGE (CBSLA.com) — A man described by police as a transient was killed Monday in a shooting involving an officer in Northridge.
The Los Angeles Police Department says officer received a disturbance call about 1 p.m.
When officers arrived to Andasol Avenue and Elkwood Street, the LAPD says they attempted to take the man into custody using a Taser and bean bags, but both were unsuccessful.
Police said they had received calls from other people who said they had been attacked by the man prior to the incident. It remains unclear whether the man was armed.
A woman who said she was the man's mother said he was 35 and homeless and had a drinking problem. She said the man had been living on the streets for about 2 ½ years.
She said she had talked to the man earlier in the day and wanted him to come to her home, but says he replied, "No, Mom. I'm gonna be OK."
Police have not confirmed the information provided by the woman nor released the identity of the deceased. They described the man as a Hispanic in his 30s.
An investigation is underway.
