Man Deported Twice Allegedly Tried To Break Into Woman's Bedroom In Port Hueneme

PORT HUENEME (CBSLA.com) — A man deported at least twice - from California and Florida - was arrested in Ventura County on suspicion of attempted burglary, Port Hueneme police announced Thursday.

Guillermo Damaso, 39, of Oxnard, was arrested Wednesday by police who were investigating a report of a "suspicious subject" jumping fences and running through the backyards of several homes in the 1500 block of North Sixth Place, Port Hueneme police Detective Rocque Lopez, Sr. said.

The man was described as wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and running northbound through neighboring backyards.

A woman told police that she was in her bedroom when she heard her window being slowly opened. When she went to the window and drew back the curtain, she found a man standing outside the window, looking in, Lopez said.

While she went to tell a family member, the homeowner left the house through a side door and confronted the man, who tried to hide and was last seen jumping over the side fence.

Officers later arrested Damaso just blocks away.

According to police, a records check showed Damaso was on active probation for weapons and drug violations in California and had an outstanding arrest warrant out of Florida for exposing himself to minors and adults.

Damaso told officers he was smuggled into the U.S. Wednesday - just hours before he tried to break into the Port Hueneme home.

"He says that he paid a coyote money to illegally cross into the United States," said Chief Andrew Salinas of the Port Hueneme Police Department. "What was even more concerning is that within that 24 hours, he was up to his same behavior as he had previously been deported for."

Agnes Gibboney, whose son was murdered by an undocumented immigrant, was infuriated. "I'm outraged because how is it that somebody can cross the border back into the United States so easily," she asked. "I'm very upset because what's happening down at the border? Where is the gap that these illegal aliens are able to cross into our country so easily and come here to this country to victimize Americans."

According to jail records, Damaso was arrested on March 8 by Oxnard police for being under the influence and was released two days later. Jail records did not indicate why Damaso was released at this time.

Damaso was being held on $200,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court Friday.

He could be sent back to Florida or deported back to Mexico.
